Description
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) are often the first line of defence against infectious disease outbreaks, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Water situation in this parish is so alarming whereby most of the water springs are not protected. It is less than 10% of the water sources that are protected with safe water coverage leaving the majority of the population to use unsafe water.
Hygiene is generally poor in almost all families in this parish. Hygiene is not given much attention where many households use dirty containers for water collection hence contaminating communal water bodies. Many households are characterised with dirty homesteads with domestic animals loitering around, consumption of unboiled water in most households and lack of kitchens and bathrooms in several households.
Sanitation is generally very low as a result of wastewater and garbage disposal resulting from numerous economic activities that take place in the area. The average safe latrines coverage is 30% while overall latrines is 50%. The main latrine technologies observed in the area are traditional grass thatched roofs with mud and poles.
