Description
Nyakasanza Parish runs an orphanage centre where it welcomes orphans and street children from the Refugee settlement camp and Bunia town. Ituri Province where we are located being a red zone with many tribal and civil wars up to this time, we have always been overwhelmed by the big number of displaced children.
Many of these children have been abandoned as babies or else evicted from their family homes later in life. Some have lost their parents to AIDS or another disease. Others have parents who still suffer trauma as a result of the the unending tribal and civil wars and have become ineffective parents.
Responsibilities
In seeking to help this young generation, a number of things have become apparent:-
- The most immediate need for many is food;
- Simply organising a feeding programme does not address the more entrenched problems faced by this generation. Unless these children are educated they will face difficulty earning a living and will remain in poverty.
- Children who have no home are unlikely to turn up to school each day. They need shelter and security.- While sponsorship may be found to send younger children to school, there is little point where a child has spent several years without formal education. Remedial and vocational education are needed.
